Can-Am Dogsled Races in Fort Kent
Last Saturday, I was in Fort Kent for the Can-Am, the annual dog sled races that draw mushers and their teams from far and near. As usual, Fort Kent, the "little community that could," did a fabulous job hosting the races. Hundreds of volunteers, headed by the extraordinary Rita Cannan, worked hard to build a snow road on Main Street and to prepare the trail for the 30, 60, and 250-mile races.
I rode on top of one of the gear-laden sleds down Main Street. I was surprised at how small the dogs were -- I had expected enormous huskies. But the six dogs pulling the sled I rode on were typical - very athletic, on the small side, and raring to race. They were really adorable and beautifully cared for.
Right before we left the starting line, it belatedly occurred to me that I did not know how to get off the sled since I realized a full stop was unlikely. As the musher reminded me: "This is a race! I'm not stopping!" Well, suffice it to say, as the sled approached the end of Main Street, I realized that the musher would have to slow down as he turned to go on to the trail. I took that opportunity to heave myself off the sled and out of the way of the next team. Not my most graceful move, but at least I didn't slow down the race!
The day was great fun. If you have never attended the Can-Am races, plan to go next March. I guarantee a great time!
