Penobscot River Restoration Project

When I am not in a hurry, I travel back from my camp on Cold Stream Pond to my home in Bangor along Route 2, rather than on Interstate 95, so that I can drive along the Penobscot River. In the fall, in particular, the reflection of the foliage on the river is absolutely beautiful. That perhaps explains why I am so excited about the Penobscot River Restoration Project.

This is the most significant East Coast river restoration project in our nation's history, and it is taking place in our great state. I worked hard to secure $10 million in federal funding for this project to match an astonishing $10 million in private contributions.

This landmark project affecting Maine's largest watershed is supported by the communities along the Penobscot, sportsmen groups, environmental organizations, the Penobscot tribe, the business community, and the owners of the dams that will be removed to restore habitat.

A coalition including the Atlantic Salmon Federation, American Rivers, Maine Audubon, Natural Resources Council of Maine, the Penobscot Indian Nation, Penobscot River Restoration Trust, the Nature Conservancy, and Trout Unlimited recently joined federal and state officials in presenting me with a framed picture to commemorate my work on the River Restoration Project. And I will enjoy watching the progress in coming years as I drive along the River.
