COLLINS FOR SENATOR ANNOUNCES CAMPAIGN LEADERSHIP TEAM

BANGOR – Collins for Senator today announced the volunteer leadership team for Senator Susan Collins’ 2014 re-election campaign.

“I have had the honor to be part of many Maine campaigns, starting with Margaret Chase Smith’s races,” said campaign co-chair Merton Henry.  This is an incredible volunteer leadership network that covers the entire state with activists ranging from experienced campaign veterans to first-time volunteers looking to make a difference for Maine.  This grassroots organization puts us in a great position when the campaign begins in earnest after Labor Day.”

The Collins for Senator volunteer leadership team includes more than 550 town and county chairs who will coordinate the state-wide field activities of thousands of volunteers.  It is the most aggressive grassroots effort ever mounted by the Collins campaign team.

Bios

Merton Henry, Scarborough

Merton Henry is the dean of the Maine GOP and was for many years a close friend and advisor to Senator Margaret Chase Smith. Mert has been a Republican stalwart for over 65 years.

Born in Hampden and an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War , he is a graduate of Bowdoin College and The George Washington University Law School. He has practiced law in Maine at the Portland firm of Jensen Baird Gardner & Henry for 55 years.

Given his historic ties to Senator Smith, its fitting that he currently serves on the Board of the Margaret Chase Library. He was Maine Co-chair of the George H. W. Bush Presidential campaigns in 1980 and 1988. He has served as Chair of the Boards of Bowdoin College and Maine Medical Center and on the boards of many other Maine charitable organizations.

Scott Hutchinson, Cumberland
A Democrat, Scott Hutchinson has been heavily involved in Maine and national politics since the 1970s. He was actively involved in Ed Muskie's campaigns, serving as treasurer of both his Senate and Presidential campaigns.

Scott's family roots have been in Maine since 1788 when his ancestors established a farm in Litchfield. Scott was born in Gardner and spent his childhood summers on the Litchfield farm. After graduating from Northeastern University and serving in the U.S. Army, Scott became involved in the banking business in Maine, eventually becoming the president of Key Bank.

Josh Tardy, Newport
A life-long Maine resident, Josh received his B.A. from the University of Maine in 1990, and earned his law degree from the University of Maine School of Law in 1993.

Josh served eight years in the Maine House of Representatives, including six years in leadership. He was elected House Republican leader from 2006-2010. Under Josh’s leadership the House Republicans secured a majority in the November 2010 elections, the first majority for the Republican Party in the Maine House in more than 35 years.

Josh was Vice-Chair for the McCain Presidential Campaign in Maine and Chairman of the Maine delegation to the 2008 Republican National Convention.  He is also a practicing trial attorney with nearly 20 years of experience in the courtroom.  He is a founding partner of Irwin, Tardy & Morris and specializes in commercial and civil litigation.

Sam Ladd, Cumberland

Sam grew up in Brunswick and graduated from Brunswick High School and Bowdoin College. After serving in the United States Army, Sam made his career in the banking industry of Maine, working first for Maine National Bank for more than 20 years and as the President and CEO of Maine Bank and Trust.

Sam is well known for his community involvement in Maine, including serving on the boards of the United Way, Maine Medical Center, Portland Symphony Orchestra, Southern Maine Community College, Boy and Girls Club of Greater Portland, Boy Scouts of America, as well as a number of other public and private organizations. He is also the recipient of the Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce's Henri Benoit Award for Leadership, and the Pinetree Council Boy Scouts of America's 2007 Distinguished Citizen Award.

Elizabeth “Betsey” McCandless, Portland

Betsey began her legal career in New York City, working there from 1982 to 1985. She moved to Maine in 1985 and joined Pierce Atwood in Portland. In 1992 she co-founded Maine's first boutique trusts and estates firm, McCandless & Hunt, which is now known as McCandless LLC.

Betsey is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), a national professional organization to which she was elected in 1995. She was a member of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court's Advisory Committee on Probate Rules for nine years, serving as Chair from 1996 through 2003. She was Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the University of Maine Foundation. Currently, Betsey serves as a Trustee of the Diocesan Funds for the Episcopal Diocese of Maine. She also serves as a Director of the Hospice of Southern Maine, a hospice program in York and Cumberland Counties, which operates the Gosnell House in Scarborough. She frequently lectures on charitable giving, estate administration and estate planning.
